The Dangers of Idols

Ezekiel 14:1-3
Now some of the elders of Israel came to me and sat before me. And the word of the Lord came to me, saying, “Son of man, these men have set up their idols in their hearts, and put before them that which causes them to stumble into iniquity. Should I let Myself be inquired of at all by them?”

This is a powerful rebuke that you must examine yourself with constantly. These elders that came to Ezekiel had close to nothing. They were in captivity and anything they most likely had the bare essentials to survive. But the trouble was not in what they had or didn’t have; it was where they were placing what they valued. The enemies had taken everything they owned from them but their hearts were still fixed on things they made idols.

The one thing that God calls all believers to hold the most important in their lives is their relationship with Him. Everything we are and that we have has been bought by Him. He asks for our devotion and our hearts, so if we put anything in the way and make anything but Him what we love and pour our devotion towards, that is an idol. It’s a dangerous thing to have idols in our hearts. We are prone to falling and there is no limit to how far we can fall. The worst of it is it comes between us and the Lord and it dirties our minds and we lose our focus on Him. He will put things in our lives and work in ways to draw us back to Him. But it is up to us to examine ourselves and put away those things that we so willingly place between us and Him.

Bitterness

Galatians 5:15
But if instead of showing love among yourselves you are always biting and devouring one another, watch out! Beware of destroying one another. (NLT)

The Bible warns us not to talk bad about one another. It’s easy to get bitter and angry when people do something bad to us huh? Our first instinct is to strike out and hurt them. Sometimes we talk bad about the other person just so we can feel like some justice has been done. The Bible is very clear that we are supposed to love those around us. This does not mean you have to take abuse but there are right ways to handle something when we have been wronged. Make sure in all you do that you are not destroying one another but lifting up each other in prayer and in all of our talk. This is taking the high road. You might say “But Bill this isn’t easy”. If it were easy everyone would be doing this huh? We must choose to be obedient to what God has commanded us to do.

The Effects of His Word on our Spirit

1 Timothy 1:5
Now the purpose of the commandment is love from a pure heart, from a good conscience, and from sincere faith.

This was the driving thought behind the Apostle Paul’s command to stay away from disputes and anything that is not of the faith that doesn’t build you up as a believer. We can look at this as kind of a ruler or a gauge whether or not what we are putting into our lives is building us up in Him. Do you walk away from friends who are believers with more questions then answers to how you need to be living your walk in Christ? Does what you put into our life help you focus on Christ and make His path for you clearer? Do you prepare yourself before going to church to be ministered to by His Spirit? Now we will not always match up like we ought to, but as we mature we should be focusing more in Christ and our faith should be growing and our desire for Him should be purer. When we let Him do in us as He wishes, He helps us love from a pure heart, a good conscience and a holy faith.

We need to go

Luke 10:2-3a
Then He said to them, “The harvest truly is great, but the laborers are few; therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest. Go…”

When I was younger, I was taught and brought under the impression that this passage said that we need to pray that God send someone out there like a full time missionary and be open to the idea that God might send me. What I have learned since then is that even though God may have a certain people to live with their occupation being ministers of Him, we are all called. This passage is not for that select few, it’s for you and me now. Jesus is saying that we need to pray the Lord equip us with His Spirit to do His work, and then go out and do it. You don’t always have to have a plan, but you have to be submitted to Him. He may put the person on your heart beforehand or He may show you on the spot. That is for Him to decide. Make up your mind that you will live a witness for Him now, obediently go, and pray for boldness and His Spirit to minister through you to the lost.

A Focused Mind and Guided Heart

2 Thessalonians 3:5
Now may the Lord direct your hearts into the love of God and into the patience of Christ.

For the believer the war is already won in Christ. However there are battles that we have to face, and the greatest battle is the one for your mind. This has got to be the toughest one because it requires discipline and a determined focus on our part. If we don’t guard our mind and the thoughts that we allow ourselves to think on, we will adapt to the pattern of the rest of the world and miss out on God’s involvement and as Matthew West says “go through the motions”. Now the beautiful truth we see in today’s verse is that as we make the choice to guard our hearts in Christ, He is granted access to leading and we walk in His strength. God is the one who directs our hearts and fills us with His love to pour out to the lost and the consistency to remain in Him, but we must determine that we are to focus on Him. When we do, we will not miss out

Focus on Stillness

Psalm 131:2
Surely I have calmed and quieted my soul, like a weaned child with his mother; like a weaned child is my soul within me.

How do you normally approach God? Do you feel inadequacy and feel you have to go through a ritual of asking for forgiveness for things you’re not even sure you did or things in the past that are already forgiven? Do you get focused on all your wants and what you feel you deserve, or even need? Are you frustrated over something that’s in your life and want Him to take you out of it? Jesus said that before we even go to the Father He already knows the requests we have in our hearts and the things that we need. So why do we go to Him? It’s so we get to know Him. David had it right. We have to push all the distractions aside, trust the Lord with our needs, and learn to focus our eyes in faith on Him. Have you ever noticed a newborn baby in the mother’s arms? They get fussy really easily and always want to be fed. God does not want us to be like newborns. He’s going to take care of us. He wants us to move forward past that mindset of satisfying our selfishness and like a weaned child just enjoying the mother’s love sit at His feet and just listen to Him.

Receiving His Word

1 Thessalonians 2:13
For this reason we also thank God without ceasing, because when you received the Word of God which you heard from us, you welcomed it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the Word of God, which also effectually works in you who believe.

We all need a jumpstart in our walk with the Lord. Living in a world that goes the opposite way of where the Lord desires to lead us, and living in a human body and dealing with a sin nature that wants to go its own way, we can’t help but get stale and dirty. We can always tell we need a cleaning if we go to God’s Word out of drudgery. We may not want to read His Word, but we selfishly want His blessing on our lives so we’ll go anyway. The way that we turn back to Him is by making a decision in our hearts to turn to Him, confess any wrong, and look to Him through His Word for strength. The key to His Word working mightily in us is in receiving it. The Greek Word for receive means “to accept or acknowledge something to be as it professes to be”. We must in faith embrace His Word coming from the authoritative mouth of God into our lives knowing full well that His Word is meant not only to change us but to be obeyed. When we embrace His Word as He intended, He completes in us what He desires to do and uses us to fulfill His purposes and in doing so cleanses us from any staleness.

His Word is Power

1 Thessalonians 1:5a
For our gospel did not come to you in word only, but also in power, and in the Holy Spirit and in much assurance…

We must never lose sight of this. Because we have accepted Christ into our lives, we have the availability of Jesus with us at all times. Because He lives in us He is capable of doing a tremendous work greater than we could ever imagine when we receive His Word to renew our minds. We must remember that His Word is alive. He is able to transform us not just with a power that can make us into decent people, but with the power that raised Jesus from the grave and brought us to life in Him. The Holy Spirit is also more than capable of leading us and completing the work of Christ in us as we renew our minds in Him. We also have the blessing and benefit of the confidence that as we trust Him, we know that He will not fail us and that our obedience and transforming He does in us will not be in vain.

Searching for God?

Psalm 9:10
Those who know Your name trust in You, for You, O LORD, have never abandoned anyone who searches for You. (NLT)

Many people are wondering if God really exists. Just the other day on my talk show I had a young lady call me who doesn’t believe in God at all. We had a great conversation on the phone and radio together. At the end of the day she really did wonder if there was a God and if she was missing it. She wasn’t as closed to the idea as she first stated. I challenged her to take 30 days and read the book Case for Christ followed by praying daily, “Lord, if You are real, make Yourself known to me.” You see, I know if you search for God He will show Himself to you. Perhaps you are trying to find God yourself. I would encourage you to pray daily asking the Lord to prove himself to you. I believe you’ll be pleasantly surprised.

Hurting God’s Heart

Ezekiel 6:9
Then those of you who escape will remember Me among the nations where they are carried captive, because I was crushed by their adulterous heart which has departed from Me, and by their eyes which play the harlot after their idols; they will loathe themselves for the evils which they committed in all their abominations.

If you read the Old Testament, you’ll find that Israel went through a lot of hard times (for the most part because of their own choices). Because we haven’t seen how wicked they were and because we misinterpret God so easily, it would be easy to think that God was harsh with them and punished them out of anger. What does today’s verse reveal about His Heart to His people? Their hearts were so far from God that they would give their worship to whatever appealed to their eyes. God saw straight through to their hearts and saw the unfaithfulness to Him. This hurt Him deeply and any punishment He gave was to help them see the error of their way and run back to Him.

How often have we done something with the thought in the back of our head “God will forgive me”? How often do we feel His tug on our heart to lead us in a particular direction and we think that we have time to turn to Him and we will do it when we’re ready and never do? How often do we hear His Truth and feel conviction in our hearts and say no to Him? While we may not act out in the atrocities that Israel did, we can be just as guilty of hurting the Heart of God. We have to cultivate a hunger for Him and choose to be sensitive to His leading. It is only when we submit to Him will we be capable of seeing the vanity of what we would naturally desire in our lives and follow Him according to His love and might.
